Lately, I’ve seen discourse on how fashion journalism is dead—I lowkey agree. I feel like most journalists for these publications are truly glazing a lot of fashion houses and creative directors, and it shows. I absolutely hate it. It’s not honest, and it’s very tiring having to hear the same thing over and over again. We need real criticism. It’s gone, and I hate that. I want to review a publication and see genuine criticism, not superficial praise. I fear everyone is afraid to speak. We have a voice, use your voice for all things. Be honest in what you believe in and tell the world.
During fashion week, it’s the same things over and over again. Like everyone is saying the same. No one seems to be honest. Everyone always talks about how great each collection is, even if the collection may be wack. This pisses me off, as some of these designers don’t really know how to design; they just make clothes. I’m not going to sit here and act like I can design anything, but it’s like what’s going on. Like, what is your vision? I want to truly understand what goes on in the designer’s mind when they create a collection, and I want to see through it. This makes it easier for the journalist, the people to really see what the designer means.
A lot of times, I notice collections that may be truly mid but people will glaze over it by saying, “Oh, this designer really brought something to the fashion house, they revolutionized the industry”. When it’s some basic ass shit. Like ugh. Let’s be honest and just critique the designer for the design. Because what is the point of fashion week if we can’t even critique? Fashion week is the time to show the world the new collection that the designer has in store for the fashion house. And during this time, we try to get insight into the designer’s thoughts behind the collections. Meaning it’s also ok to criticize them. And when I say criticize, I don’t mean be rude and say mean ass shit. I mean giving our honest opinion on how the collection made us feel.
Of course, with this, we can also say how the designer just doesn’t understand the fashion house they have been appointed to. Let’s become more ok with criticism in the fashion industry. Let’s learn to build off of criticism and to learn from our mistakes. Usually, when a new designer has been appointed to a new fashion house, it takes time for them to get adjusted to the house. This usually means that their first collection may turn out to be mid. And this to me seems perfectly ok and normal, as they just started. BUT when they have been there for a while, it’s like Bruh, come on, you should get this by now.
