Are Skinny Jeans Coming Back?

With trends, things come and go, but as we are almost halfway through the 2020s, I feel as if skinny jeans might be making a comeback. This is being said because the trends from 2022-2023 have been based on things from back in the day, such as the 90s-2000s. Most people have been wondering if 2010s fashion is also going to become a trend, as it seems like fashion from previous decades became trends.

It seems that after quarantine, people incorporated baggy jeans into their wardrobes and got rid of skinny jeans. This whole transition to me seems a bit forced, as TikTok fashion was a big trend source at the time and still is. Based on trends these days, the y2k aesthetic has made people dress in more fitted clothing than before, which seems to have influenced why skinny jeans may come back, as people lean more into fitted clothing over oversized clothing.

Personally, I have adjusted well to baggy jeans. I enjoy wearing them; I feel very comfortable in them. But at times, I do see myself going back to skinny jeans, only because I imagine how great they would look with my Miu Miu boot dupes that I got off EGO. Seeing this one outfit that Bella Hadid had worn back in the day with her skinny jeans also gives me an idea on how they would look great if they came back on trend.

I remember when skinny jeans went out of trend, and I got rid of every pair in my closet because I felt that I had finally found jeans that would make me feel confident in the way I dress. The discovery of baggy jeans was a time when I felt like myself. I felt like I could dress however I wanted. Getting rid of these skinny jeans felt like a new beginning. It didn’t really feel like I was taking part in a trend because where I live, people don’t really follow trends, so I didn’t feel like I was part of something at all. It took me a while to build the perfect baggy jeans collection, but it was worth it. But now I feel like I might start to wear skinny jeans again. I love how baggy jeans made me feel, but I feel like I used baggy jeans to cover my insecurities from myself. Skinny jeans made me so insecure because I didn’t like the way I looked in them, and when I put baggy jeans on, I felt fabulous. I don’t know if it’s because I’m getting older, but I find that I’m starting to like and appreciate how my body looks instead of hating it.

A while back, around October, a trend was going around called “big top, little bottom, and little top, big bottom.” This trend seemed to have a little insight into how skinny jeans can be used in styling by different people. As a Gen-Z, I can say that at times skinny jeans give me a HUGE ick, but at other times, they seem to go well when styled properly by the right person.

If skinny jeans were to come back on trend, I feel like I wouldn’t be mad. I wouldn’t be mad because when I left them, I was in a different mindset than I am in now. So having this new mindset opens my eyes to see how I can really make these jeans make me feel good.

My transition from skinny to baggy jeans was heavily influenced by the internet. During that time, I was on social media a lot, and that caused me to base my looks on how the people I saw were dressed. I would spend hours on Pinterest to make sure that the next outfit I found was close enough to what I had in my closet. This was a way for me to find my personal style and to experiment with what I had.

Most people’s opinions on skinny jeans having a comeback may be different than others, which is totally fine. But I see that for me, they may make a comeback as the trends are quickly moving. The 2000s trend, in my opinion, was kind of mid because people dressed in their idea of what 2000s fashion was like based on the brands from the day. Some people really dress as if they are from the decade, but most exaggerate it and make it into something it’s not.

I also think and feel as if the skinny jeans hate is forced. Because if you never had a great or a good experience with skinny jeans, you shouldn’t say, “Well, I think skinny jeans suck” because you never had any good experience with them. But if you had a good experience with them, it makes sense as to why you would hate them.

But trends come and go; it’s important to remember that it’s your closet, your wardrobe. You get to pick whatever you want to wear, and you get to wear whatever you want.
