My journey with fashion or wanting to dress better was when I felt like the way I dressed never really showed who I was. I felt like everyone around me dressed better. I wanted to dress like them but deep inside me I wanted to also be different because almost everyone shopped at the same place, and wore the same things, I felt that I needed to be different when it came to my fashion.

The influence of Pinterest

I discovered Pinterest, I think during the summer of 2019 or the beginning of 7th grade. With this discovery, I was able to make boards of clothing ideas that I liked. I would spend numerous hours on this app for clothing inspo that would somewhat shape my fashion taste. One of my boards would be winter outfits which I would look at when it came to dressing up since during this time it was fall/winter.

Nowadays I still use Pinterest for the same reasons but I have decided to dive deeper into what pieces I would like to see on me. For example, I have a board that is called “Wardrobe” in this board I have different sections like shoes, tops, jackets, pants/skirts, matching sets, dresses, and accessories. These sections individually have their own vibe and style which makes things unique at all times when it comes to putting them together.

Disclaimer, with these ideas that I got from Pinterest I wouldn’t necessarily recreate the outfit but see which pieces I have in my closet that would somewhat match the vision. Using Pinterest as a guide is what made it easier for me to see what I like. I would use it as a shopping guide when I want to buy new pieces for my closet.

PAQ

During quarantine, I would be on YouTube a lot because no school and no going out. With this I would watch a channel called “PAQ” it was a fashion channel with four guys who all had different styles, showcasing different challenges in fashion. Watching these guys helped me understand more of what I liked the most, either if it was streetwear, high fashion, etc. They helped shape most of what I wear to this day. With their unique taste, I was able to pick out what I liked from each person that would help me when making my clothing choices.

Unfortunately, they stopped making videos which sucks but knowing that they were there to teach me how to style things and that being unique in the way you dress is not bad.

The fashion aspect of TikTok during quarantine

Around the time of watching PAQ, I also started watching TikToks about fashion. During this fashion era, there were categories such as e-boy/e-girl, soft girl/soft boy, and most importantly vsco girl. Of course, there were others but during this time there weren’t very many unique-based styles. Honestly, it was hard trying to figure out what would look good on me hence the number of resources and trends I had.

Eventually, the TikTok trends became better and better in my opinion. With the evolution, I could pick out which things I liked and would see myself wearing.

Why do I love fashion?

My love for fashion is the fact that I can express myself through my clothing. Yes, there are other ways to express one’s self but for me, fashion makes things more unique. Seeing people wear what they want without caring about what others may say brings me joy. Because with this mindset you grow to have confidence in who you are. Fashion can also express who you are, if we look at tribes from back in the day and till this day, we see that they wear things that differentiate them from other tribes. Well with these tribal clothing, some make look the same but they have something that makes them different from others.
